Balance Life and Job 2

The fast-paced, technologically advanced, complex world has brought many changes to our lives. The pace of change does not seem to be decreasing, but rather increasing all the time. These changes put more demands and pressures on each of us to make adjustments to do more with less. While stress is a definite modern world reality, being “stressed-out” is not. We incorrectly believe that being stressed-out is “just the way it is.” And we often get in fight with each other about who suffers the worst!

This is silly thinking. Stress can be a powerful motivator in our lives, and in fact, you can discover to use stress to your advantage. If you think about it—one form of stress or another is responsible for everything big and small in our world. For example, the earth “stresses” a piece of coal until it turns into a beautiful diamond. The key is to find out how you can use the stress in your life to produce a diamond out of a rock!

As with most things in life, prevention is the greatest medicine. By learning about your personal health risks, family history, current health, and life choices (eating, exercise, smoking, drinking, stress) you can make smarter decisions. Ultimately, your life choices affect how you feel and how you function.
Stress management comes down to self-management. It is about choosing appropriate options as well as making smart decisions.

The best way to avoid “burn out” is to become aware of your distinctive stressors and coping mechanisms. Burn out comes from experiencing stress over a prolonged period and often leads to a visit to the doctor. There are many ways to alleviate stress, however, you must find what works best for you and commit to doing it on a daily basis.

Balance Life and Job

What is Stress in your life?
Stress is feeling of an event or circumstance which is understood to be a possible danger. It can be any force or pressure put on a system, living or nonliving, which may result in a need for the system to adjust or change. Stress on humans is like a rubber band. You also stretch to meet the surroundings around you, the demands of your current lifestyle, and the pressures you put on yourself. If pulled too far, stress displays itself in real conditions mentally, physically, and emotionally. Like a rubber band split when stretched too far, human beings have a breaking point too. The secret is to learn how to handle stress in your life and dodge and becoming over-stressed.

The A B C’s of Stress
Activating event
Belief about the event
Consequences of the event

Stress is internal pressure we put on ourselves from external forces. Living with moderate stress keeps you sharp and ready to move forward, intense stress can put you out of duty. It depends on your stress levels—how much you can deal with effectively. Some people flourish with stressful situations and some people shatter at the slightest unpleasant circumstance. Depending on your current stress level, when confronted with a stressor, you may respond with surprise or feel stuck.

Lessons of Baseball 3

If the Dodgers understand anything, they realize that they are in the service business. While it is true that the Dodgers field a major league baseball team and that team has the goal of winning the World Series, for the fan, whether season ticket holder or once in a life time visitor, it is all about the experience.

The Dodgers cannot change or influence the weather at game time. They do their best to field a competitive team and to win games. But what they can, and do consistently, are to make sure that the fans and visitors have a positive experience.

From the parking lot attendants to the janitors cleaning during and after the game, the staff at Dodger Stadium are friendly, helpful and professional.

To demonstrate the commitment to making sure that visitors are heard, when I arrived for the ballgame I was handed a Client Relations Feedback Form. The management is serious about wanting to improve the experience of visitors and to resolving issues that might have occurred during any of the 82 home games played their. To that end they encourage people to write, phone or email them.

I know from first hand experience that the Dodgers respond quickly and professionally because I tested the system regarding an issue on opening day.

Do you have a client feedback system? Are you encouraging your clients to provide your organization with feedback so that you can improve their experience?

The Dodgers won the game 9-7. I learned that these two teams don’t ever quit, they never give up. That is the true mark of professionals. And while baseball is, in the end, a game, business can also be seen in the same light.

Baseball lesson 2

Even though I am a paying client of the Dodgers, when I arrived at the stadium, I was given a small gift; a token of appreciation for my patronage. I found this to be a very kind and thoughtful gesture. When a client visits your facility, do you provide a gift of some sort?

Dodger Stadium was opened in 1962, making it one of the oldest ballparks in the major leagues. At 45 years of age, it is still a wonderful place to spend time. It is clean and well lit. Signs are easy to read. The seats and aisles are clean. The actual field is gorgeous. The grass turf is of such high quality that it appears to be a carpet. The view of the field from the stands is almost breathtaking it is so beautiful.

I heard from a client that her goal was to have an office that was ‘tour worthy.” I wasn’t sure exactly what she meant until she explained it.

Having actually toured Dodger Stadium and visited many times as a fan, the benchmark is clear about what it means: that you would be honored to bring anyone from anywhere to your facility and they would be impressed, even though your venue might be old and not necessarily in the best part of town. Is your facility “tour worthy?”

Are you as proud of you physical place of business as the Dodgers are? There are many uniformed staff members available to answer questions and provide assistance, if needed.
