Cover Sheets 101

Cover Sheets 101. You have determined to apply for a job. Your resume is ready, but you want a cover sheet or cover letter. What is a cover sheet? It is a simple, one-page letter which shows your objective in asking for the job. So how does one generate a nice cover sheet which will make an impact on employers?

Here are some tips:

1. Be straight to the point.

As stated above, it is a simple letter representing your plan to apply for a job. Most of the time, that is all there is. So do not decorate it with anything, and do not use unnecessary words (chiefly adjectives) which will only make it give the impression of being unprofessional.

2. Use a word processor on a computer.

As attractive as your handwriting is, do not hand- write it. It should be done professionally and tidily, by means of a word processor.

3. keep away from fancy fonts, colors, and gigantic sizes.

Do not try to cram the page by enlarging the font size. Cover sheets are intended to be short. Do not be enticed to make it ‘beautiful’ by using rainbow colors, and dissimilar fonts which you believe are nice. Make it straightforward and professional! No frames, images, etc.

4. Be concise.

Cover sheets are one-page and centered. Together with the resume, it is not creased but positioned inside an envelope, typically a manila envelope, where it will fit without being folded.

5. Steer clear of mistakes.

As elementary as this sound, many people still execute mistakes even in a two-sentence cover sheet, so study it over and over until you are certain that it is perfect. Simple typos and grammatical errors will be larger-than-life in a cover sheet, as it is very brief. So before you give it to your prospective employer, make sure it is error-free.
