Die Casting Made Better – Aluminum Die Casting Company. Aluminum is indeed the most popular material used in Die Casting. The main reason why Aluminum Die Castings has become popular is that its production process can be completed in less time, it can create component pieces and it can make attractive trims. It is also useful when it comes to creating several parts that require many details, which is why Aluminum Die Castings has been the favorite by many Die Casting companies.

Based on the statistics released by United States Census Bureau, the number of companies that are engaged in Aluminum Die Casting is over 300. In fact, the rate of Aluminum Die Castings being transported within the United States almost reached $4 billion in the year 2001. The majority of Die Casting companies are located in areas close to Great Lakes because it is in the vicinity of automotive business.

Die Casting manufacturers must thoroughly think about the three important things if they wan to use Aluminum Die Castings. First, manufacturers have to identify the appropriate alloy that will be used in the project. Second is that, manufacturers must know if they will or will not utilize the pore-free casting. Lastly, manufacturers should carefully study their schedule if they still have time to utilize a cold chamber machine.

In distinction to other aluminum casting processes, Aluminum Die Castings uses different kind of mold, and different process in which molten metals are poured into the die. Also, many people find it hard to distinguish a zinc die casted metals to aluminum die casted metals. The truth is, they may actually look the same from a distance, but if you look closely you’ll see the obvious difference. The metals that are die casted in aluminum are shiny and smooth, while zinc die casted metals is a bit grainy and rough.

Medtronic Inc. Will Eliminate 1,500 to 1,800 Jobs

Medtronic Inc. will eliminate 1,500 to 1,800 jobs by the end of June, including about 600 of the company’s 8,000 employees in Minnesota.

The medical technology firm, which operates a manufacturing facility in Tempe, said the cuts will include approximately 400 U.S. employees who have accepted early retirement or voluntary separation agreements. Those employees will leave the company May 29.

Medtronic spokesman Chuck Grothaus said the cuts are part of a restructuring plan the company first discussed in February based on concerns about the economy. He said the move was made to “make sure we’re aligned with an adequate number of employees in our business units that are growing versus those that have kind of stabilized over the past year.”

Medtronic also said it is still hiring — it plans to add approximately 700 jobs during its fiscal 2010, primarily in sales and research and development.

The restructuring announcement came after the company released its fourth-quarter and full-year 2009 financial results.

Fourth-quarter net earnings were $250 million, or 22 cents per share, down 69 percent from $812 million, or 72 cents per share, in the comparable period last year.

The company reported net sales of $3.83 billion in the fourth quarter, down slightly from $3.86 billion a year ago.

For the year, Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) had net earnings of $2.29 billion, or $2.04 per diluted share, in 2009. That’s up 2.7 percent from $2.23 billion, or $1.95 per diluted share, in 2008.

Net sales came in at $14.6 billion in 2009, up 8 percent from $13.52 billion the previous year.

Looking forward, Medtronic said it anticipates earnings of $3.10 to $3.20 per share for 2010, with revenue growth of 5 percent to 8 percent.

Die Casting Zinc Tooling

The Role of Zinc Die Casting Tooling. Zinc parts are produced with the zinc die casting tooling in the zinc die casting machine. The components of the zinc die casting, as well as the zinc dies are alloy tool steels that are divided into two parts. These 2 parts are the ejector die half and the fixed die half, which permit the removal of the castings from the die casting machine. Modern dies may include cores, movable slides or other portions that can produce threads, holes, and shapes as may be required in casting. The sprue holes in fixed die half permit molten metal into the die and fill the cavity. Dies also have the locking pins that serve to secure the two halves. It also includes ejector pins that help in taking out the cast parts and openings for lubricant and coolant.

When the machine for die casting shuts off, the 2 die halves will be held together and locked by the hydraulic pressure of the zinc machine. The die parting line is the machine’s surface wherein the meeting and locking of the ejector as well as the fixed halves happens. The total area of the part’s surface being die casted, the pressure and the die parting line’s measurement needed in injecting metal to the cavity’s die manages to determine the machine’s clamping force.

What people refer to as those die casting molds and insert dies made of zinc are what is referred to as zinc die casting tooling. This tooling is available in various styles, shapes, and sizes. It comes in either 1 or more cavities. Zinc die cast tools varies due to cavity inserts as well as trim dies.

MANUFACTURERS AMONG LEADERS IN LOST JOBS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY

Figures released by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) show that 79,300 jobs were lost by the state in January 2009, leading to an unemployment rate of 10.1% statewide. The total unemployed statewide are reported at 1,863,000 people.
Los Angeles County, saw its’ unemployment rate jump to 10.5% in January from 9.2% in December. And, the experts are not optimistic for all of 2009.
Economist Jack Keyser, of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation reported his group is expecting LA County will lose an additional 89,000 jobs in 2009 and he suggests unemployment could exceed 10.5% before the year is ended.
Los Angeles county, according to the figures lost a net 41,900 last year, and nearly all of them – almost 41,000 – were in retail, manufacturing and construction. In January, 2009 retail lost 15,100 jobs, manufacturing lost 6,800 jobs and construction, which has been spiraling downward for more than a year, lost another 4,800 jobs.
“If those selling goods are having a hard time staying employed so are the people who make the goods,” according to the Los Angeles Times.”Manufacturing took the second largest hit of any sector in 2008, shredding 13,100 jobs.”
“The losses were felt across the board, by metal workers, furniture makers and aerospace manufacturers alike. Boeing Co, in Long Beach eliminated at least 68 positions last year, with more expected in 2009,” the Times reported. “The airplane manufacturer said it would cut 10,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce.
“The losses continued into the new year when Superior Industries International, which makes aluminum wheels for the auto industry, announced January 13, it would close its’ Van Nuys plant. The move eliminated 290 jobs and is expected to save the company $16.5 million per year in labor costs,” the LA Times said.
Trade, transportation and utilities, which includes retail lost the most number of jobs between January, 2008 and January, 2009 dropping 39,900 jobs.
The second largest decline that year was manufacturing, losing 26,500 jobs. Both
durable goods (down 13,500) and non-durable goods (down 13,000) attributed to the
drop within manufacturing, the EDD reported.
“While dwindling consumer demand contributed to many of the layoffs, additional manufacturing jobs were lost to outsourcing and to new technology that reduces the need for workers. There are 29% fewer workers in manufacturing in Los Angeles County today than there were in 2008,” the Times reported
