What to Write on Your Resume

What to Write on Your Resume. A blank page stares at you, and you are about to type the things which will ‘sell’ you to your employer. What do you write?

1. Basic information

Your name, birthday, current address, and contact details (landline, mobile phone number, and e-mail).

2. Educational information

Where you graduated (or will be graduating from), and graduate school, if any.

3. Awards, special citations

Are you a dean’s lister? Graduated with honors? Don’t be too humble—these things will help show your employer that you are serious in what you do.

4. Job Experiences

Did you volunteer at a museum? Did on-the-job training (OJT) for a publishing house? Became an assistant to a scientist/professor? Put these in as it will show you are serious about the career path you are taking.

5. Seminars, workshops attended

These will show how much you are willing to learn, especially if it is beyond the academe (not required, or held outside the campus).

6. References

During college, do you remember that professor who believed in you; constantly urging you to continue writing, or to apply for a certain job? Ask him or her if you can add his or her name in your resume as a reference. A reference is someone who knows you well; it is better to stick with someone who really knows you and how you work, rather than someone famous, whose name will look good on your resume. Why? Because your reference will be the people the company you are applying to will ask about you. You wouldn’t want them ignoring an e-mail from the company because they cannot remember you, or because they have nothing good to say about you.

YOUR STRENGTHS ACCORDING TO OTHERS

YOUR STRENGTHS ACCORDING TO OTHERS

There often is a need to validate the information you gave out in your job interviews, especially at a point when your prospective employer is ready to get you on board. Before you get hired, your prospective employer would want to find out what your job references think about you. You need a list of people you have worked with who can credibly attest to your skills and qualifications as they relate to the job you are applying for. When you have others speaking of your strengths, your prospective employers are able to get a third party perspective of what you are bringing into their company. Your prospective employer would want to know that your other employers appreciate your contribution to their company.

Needless to say, it is important to keep contact with your previous employers. Not especially if they have been extremely pleased with your performance during your employment. Keep a list of these important job references ready so you can whip it out as your prospective employer asks for it. These job references are not usually made part of the resume. You can always indicate in your cover letter an item about having your job references ready and available upon the request of your prospective employer. Make sure that the contact numbers in your job references list are updated so that your prospective employers are able to contact them as needed. Make sure also that you ask for the permission of your job references before including them in your list. You would want them to know that you are submitting their names with your job application and that you would appreciate them putting in a good word for you when your prospective employer gives them a call.

A RESUME THAT MATTERS

A RESUME THAT MATTERS

You do not want your resume to end up in the rejects pile or worse in the trash bin. An effective resume is you key to getting into the door for an interview. Your resume should mirror what you are and what you can do. Your strengths and capabilities should jump out of your resume and wow the company officer screening it. A lot of resume help is out there for you to read and learn from. Do not take this step for granted as this might just be where you are getting stuck at. Reams and reams of resumes sent out do not get you an interview for that job you are looking for. Just one properly written and put together resume is enough to land you that perfect job.

If you are looking for resume help, here are a few things that could give you the resume help you need:

1. Match your resume contents to your job objective. The structure of your resume and the way you highlight your achievements should be aligned with your specific job objective. Having a resume that follows a certain job objective is more organized and clearer, allowing the screening officer to see how, in less specific terms, you have worked your way towards your objective.

2. Use your resume to sell yourself (but, remember to be truthful in your advertising). Your resume should get you the job interview and not the job itself. Just like an advertising copy, your resume should be short and crisp with none of the fine print. It’s just a teaser designed to make the screening officer want to know more about you.

3. Quantify your achievements. Most all businesses are concerned with the numbers, with how you have been able to contribute to the bottom lines of your previous employers. Use figures to show how effectively managed an x number of people or how you have succeeded in generating x dollars in sales revenues for a particular campaign. These numbers will pop out of your resume and give the screener the impression that you indeed know what you are talking about.

4. Put down important names as your job references. Any resume help material would stress this. If you have worked closely with company executives and are confident enough about what they think of you, you should put them in as your references. Even in the section where you outline your job accomplishments, you should indicate whether or not you have been able to work with or reported to these key company officials. This will show the screening officer the value of your work to the companies you have previously worked for.
