Job References

Your resume is carefully though about and typed; it looks professional enough, and yet not too serious—it shows your versatile nature, balancing your studies and yet engaging in extra-curricular activities. Everything looks right in place.

Your resume is not wholly about you, though; at the last part, you are asked to provide job references, or people who know you well enough to talk about you.

Who should you put?

1. College professor

If you have one or a couple of college professors who believed in you and reminded you of how good you are at what you do, and to whom you were friendly with, these are probably the best references. You have studied under them, they have seen your work, answer their questions in class or even ask questions yourself, and they have heard you speak. These are the people who know you best, and who can speak about your strengths (and possibly, weaknesses as well).

2. Former employer

If you weren’t asked to leave your former job, and if everything is still good between you and your former boss/employer, he or she is in the best position to talk about your performances in your previous job; how you have been an asset to the company, and how hard you worked for them.

3. Former co-worker

He or she could be the best person to judge you as your co-worker knows you in an informal way. Also, he or she can vouch how easy you are to work with, or even how you stimulate your team or group into thinking of new ideas and/or projects for the company.

There are many choices for a reference, but keep in mind that it is best to ask them if it is okay to put them in as a reference. Try to see also how they react, as this might tell you whether they are the right person to put or not.

Job References – An Applicant’s Silent Supporters. When you apply for a job, the first things you give out are your best skills, your strengths, your professional experiences and educational background. The least thing you give emphasis is in incorporating job references in your resume that you oftentimes have it labeled ‘available upon request’. But do you know that it is a plus that you provide these significant things predominantly?

Most employers look for in a complete and informative fact laden resume and these references should be made available the moment your curriculum vitae lands in the hands of your prospective company.
Job references serve as your back-up in finally getting that dream job. They are your silent supporters that anything they say will be a further plus to your application status. This is the reason why it is of great magnitude to write three available references in your resume. Talk to them before signing them as your work reference and make it known to them your career goals, why you want to get the job and why you chose them to be one of your references. It is important that you highlight these things for your reference to understand your real purpose of getting them. Let it be known to them that their words are more than enough for you to qualify in the job and that you put so much conviction in them. This way, you’ll have their support and approval.

If you finally have their endorsement, make certain that you only provide pertinent details of your job references. This includes the name, position and contact number. Other information beyond these is not encouraged. Do not provide very personal details of your references, this will not only invade their privacies but the lack of respect and professionalism they so deserve coming from you.

YOUR STRENGTHS ACCORDING TO OTHERS

There often is a need to validate the information you gave out in your job interviews, especially at a point when your prospective employer is ready to get you on board. Before you get hired, your prospective employer would want to find out what your job references think about you. You need a list of people you have worked with who can credibly attest to your skills and qualifications as they relate to the job you are applying for. When you have others speaking of your strengths, your prospective employers are able to get a third party perspective of what you are bringing into their company. Your prospective employer would want to know that your other employers appreciate your contribution to their company.

Needless to say, it is important to keep contact with your previous employers. Not especially if they have been extremely pleased with your performance during your employment. Keep a list of these important job references ready so you can whip it out as your prospective employer asks for it. These job references are not usually made part of the resume. You can always indicate in your cover letter an item about having your job references ready and available upon the request of your prospective employer. Make sure that the contact numbers in your job references list are updated so that your prospective employers are able to contact them as needed. Make sure also that you ask for the permission of your job references before including them in your list. You would want them to know that you are submitting their names with your job application and that you would appreciate them putting in a good word for you when your prospective employer gives them a call.
